The 2022 Austral Orange was one of those bottles discovered almost by accident — the kind of wine you open out of curiosity and end up talking about for the rest of the evening. Produced by Domaine de la Ferme Saint-Martin in the heights of the Southern Rhône, its vineyards sit around 400 meters above sea level, bringing an unexpected sense of freshness and tension to a region more often associated with warmth and power.

What impressed us most was its clarity. Despite being an orange wine — still something of an experiment in the French wine world — it remains remarkably clean, precise, and elegant. There is texture, subtle grip, and bright summer energy, but without the oxidative heaviness or volatility that often defines the category. It feels less like a “natural wine statement” and more like a beautifully controlled reinterpretation of what Rhône terroir can become at altitude.
